LIFESPAN
SEASON TWO - THE MOVIE - SEASON THREE
BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2000
DIRGE, RAMJET, and THRUST -- the trio affectionately dubbed "coneheads" -- naturally share the same creation history, as I never updated one without applying the very same changes to the other two. I have forgotten the precise date of their original creation, but I do know it happened in late 1997. The rule of keeping icons within the 32x32 pixel format meant there was no way for them to look anything but ridiculous -- like pencil heads, in fact! By 1999, I decided that the basic face of any character with "kibble" -- extra parts and details that are more or less unconnected to the head itself -- should be more or less comparable to the full-size heads of characters with relatively straightforward helmet designs. I forget which of the trio I would tend to update first, but it may have been RAMJET in the beginning. It matters little, however, as later years have seen me pretty much work on all three alongside one another. The cone and the curvature of their faces have been the most tweak-needy parts, as well as proportions, which play an especially important part in authenticity.
SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011
Come early 2007, DIRGE and the others were among the first dozen or two out of all of the characters to be reexamined. I knew, of course, that one sure change was the colouring and the shading, which was done alongside the diagonal lines I did to try to make it look metallic. It was fairly complicated, because it meant doing three diagonal-line nuances for each shading. I also noticed that I had gone about the cone rendering a bit wrong; there was too much curvature along the sides. To remedy that, I simply straightened out the lines and increased the angle. In the years that followed, there were the usual improvements in all areas -- colouring, shading, and scale, always making him a little larger to help everything fit together in a satisfying way.
